LTC James Spence, SF

Professor of Military Science

LTC Spence, a native of Illinois, entered active duty in 1989 upon graduation from the U.S. Military Academy. Commissioned Infantry and  upon completion of IOBC and Ranger School, LTC Spence served with the 25th Inf Div as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Support Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer. He volunteered for and completed Special Forces training in 1995, then was assigned to 1st Special Forces Group, Ft. Lewis, WA, where he served as a Detachment Commander; Group Assistant Ops Officer and Headquarters Company Commander. He then served with U.S. Special Operations Command Pacific, deploying throughout Asia on operational, training and humanitarian deployments. LTC Spence completed the Army Command and General Staff Officers Course in 2003 and returned to 1st SF Group at Ft Lewis. He commanded a company through multiple deployments to include Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan. 








CPT Barrett R. Newsom

Assistant Professor Military Science and Battalion Executive Officer

Captain Newsom is an Assistant Professor of Military Science as well as the Battalion Executive Officer. He is a 2005 ROTC graduate from James Madison University and has held the following leadership positions: Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, Squadron Assistant Plans and Operations Officer and his most recent assigned as a Reconnaissance Troop Commander. His military training includes the Air Defense Officers Basic Course, Maneuver Captains Career Course, Sniper Employment Course, Ranger School, Airborne, Air Assault, Pathfinder Schools as well as a Combative's Level III instructor.  Captain Newsom has deployed twice in support Operation Iraqi Freedom: OIF 06 – 08 and OIF 10 – 11 / Operation New Dawn.  His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Combat Action Badge.








Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan W. Fox

Assistant Professor Military Science and Recruiting Operations Officer

LTC Fox entered active duty in 1981 upon graduation from High School. He served 3 years in the 82nd Airborne Division as an Infantryman and a Pathfinder. He ended his time in service in 1984 and entered the University of Wisconsin/Madison, where he joined the Army Reserves and Army ROTC. He was commissioned in 1990 as a Regular Army Infantry Officer.  His military training includes, Airborne school, Pathfinder school, Recondo School, Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced courses, Ranger School, Malaysian Combat Tracking School, Special Forces Phase II Demolitions Course, Special Forces Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Instructor School. He has served as a Infantry Platoon Leader, Infantry Company Executive Officer, Support Platoon Leader, Assistant Brigade S3 Officer, Company Commander, Infantry Battalion S4, ROTC APMS, ROK Liaison Officer, Brigade Plans Officer and as a Stryker Infantry Battalion Operations Officer.








MSG James Eagleman

Senior Military Instuctor

Master Sergeant James T. Eagleman (U.S. Army). A native of Michigan, he enlisted in the Army in 1989 as an Infantryman.  MSG Eagleman’s duty assignments include 1/506th Parachute Infantry at Camp Greaves Korea;  101st Div. 3/187th Infantry (Rakkasan);  Recon platoon as a Scout/Sniper, attached to 5th Special Forces Group Sniper locker at Ft. Campbell, KY; NCOIC Engineering ABS- AFKN Korea; First Sergeant, Defense Information School, National Training Center Operations Group Sergeant Major Ft Irwin, California; Military Combat Advisor Baghdad, Iraq 54th Brigade 6 DIV Iraq Infantry as a Command Sergeant Major trainer and mentor for Iraq Army CSM’s.








MSG Tywayne Richardson

Military Instuctor

MSG Richardson is a Senior Instructor for Military Science.  His duties as a Field Artillery Noncommissioned Officer have included Howitzer Gunner, Ammunition Team Chief, and Howitzer Section Chief in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Some of his accomplishment include serving as a US Army Drill Sergeant and a Combat Advisor to the 9th Iraqi Army Division in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  His awards include the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara for outstanding contributions to the Field Artillery Corps, the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3OLC), Army Achievement Medal (9OLC), Valorous Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal (4th Award), National Defense Service Medal (Star Device), Korean Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal (2nd Star), Global War on Terrorism Medal and Expeditionary Medal.  NCOPD (3rd Award), the Drill Sergeant Badge, and the Combat Action Badge.








Thomas Henning

Supply Technician

Chief Henning retired from the US Coast Guard in 2000 after serving 20 years. His tours in the Coast Guard were aboard the Coast Guard Cutters Mellon, Munro, Steadfast, Redwood, Yocona and Acacia. He also served at Air Station Traverse City, Michigan and two tours at Vessel Traffic Service, Sault Ste. Marie, MI where he retired as their Operations Center Supervisor. His military awards include The Coast Guard Medal (extraordinary heroism), Achievement Medal, Commendation Medal, Expert Rifle Medal, Expert Pistol Medal, Armed forces Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and others. Mr. Henning worked at MTU’s Office of Student Records and Registration as Veterans Certifying Official prior to becoming the Army ROTC Supply Technician in 2008. He is a native of Whitewater, Wisconsin who relocated to the Keweenaw area in 2002 and is married to the former Kimberly Mayo of Baraga, Michigan. He has a daughter, son and 3 stepdaughters.








Barbara Kroneberger

Human Resources Assistant

Mrs. Barbara J. Kroneberger is a native of Michigan. She enlisted in the Army February 1982. In 1985 she transferred to the Army Reserve; in May 1989 she took a Federal Civil Service position as Unit Administrative Technician with the 182nd Transportation Company in Traverse City, MI. In 1994 she was promoted to a Unit Administrator. Mrs. Kroneberger retired after 21 years from the Army Reserve on September 2003. She has worked as the Human Resource Technician for Michigan Technological University Army ROTC since January 2004.








Evelyn Colon-Peters

ROTC Department Secretary

Mrs. Colon-Peters is the University Secretary for MTU Army ROTC. She was an enlisted member of the US Air Force from 1984 through 1989 and currently holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and Spanish. She is a native of New York and has made her home in Calumet since 1990. Mrs. Colon-Peters is married to Mr. Brian Peters of Calumet and has two daughters.
