ROTC Offers Many Opportunities to Excel
In Army ROTC, it's not all classroom and field training. There are many opportunities
for you to get to know your fellow cadets better and increase your skills in a variety
of areas. Learn more about these events and activities below.

Ranger Challenge
The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other
completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets
test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises.
Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.

Pershing Rifles
The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity
to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision
trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of
leadership, military bearing and discipline.

We Offer Many Opportunities You Won’t Find Anywhere Else On campus
When you’re a Cadet in the UNC Army ROTC Program, it's not all classroom and
field training. There are many opportunities for you to get to know your fellow
cadets better, increase your skills in a variety of areas, and have some extra
fun.

Optional Training Events
The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with
each other completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination
where Cadets test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and
field exercises. The Tar Heel Battalion teams traditionally place at the top in
the competition each year.
Each fall during the week before classes start, we sponsor Move In Week
where new and returning Cadets can move into their dorms early (and beat the
mad rush!) and participate in Adventure Training, with lots of free food
provided!

Volunteer Activities
As a Cadet, you can volunteer to participate in some of our extracurricular
events that gain you free access to college and professional sporting and other
interesting (and fun!) events. Our Color Guard performs at UNC football and
basketball games, NBA basketball games, and other public functions during the
school year. We also form Usher Teams that work at UNC home football games to
earn money to make our social events free of charge for cadets. And we sponsor
a community-service activity each month that gives back to the community that
supports us so well all year long.

Social and Other Events
Each fall, the Tar Heel Battalion hosts a Dining In, where we share a meal,
Army traditions, and poke fun at each other. In the winter, we put on the
Military Ball and bring our spouses or “significant others” in to share in the
fun. And each spring, on the day before Commencement, we host the Commissioning
Ceremony wher all of our graduating Lieutenants are commissioned in to the US
Army in front of their friends and families.
