ROTC Offers Many Opportunities to Excel
In Army ROTC, it's not all classroom and field training. There are many opportunities
for you to get to know your fellow cadets better and increase your skills in a variety
of areas. Learn more about these events and activities below.
Ranger Challenge
The Ranger Challenge is an opportunity for schools to "compete" with each other
completing military tasks. In addition to a written examination where Cadets
test their Army knowledge, there are physical fitness drills and field exercises.
Battalions leave a Ranger Challenge with stronger bonds and sharper skills.
Pershing Rifles
The National Society of Pershing Rifles gives Army ROTC Cadets the opportunity
to develop to the highest degree possible. Cadets can take part in precision
trick rifle drill teams that provide them with the outstanding traits of
leadership, military bearing and discipline.

Mentorship Program
Cadets are organized into Mentor Groups, sometimes called “Buddy Groups” or “Ranger Families.” These groups provide new cadets with senior cadets who can mentor them in everything from academics to PT. Mentor Groups also help groups relax and commonly do social events outside of ROTC.
Holiday Reception
During the Holiday Reception, held in December before final exams, is an opportunity for the battalion to join together in a festive atmosphere and observe many age old traditions of the United States military.
Dining In/ Out
During the spring semester, the battalion holds a formal meal commonly known as a Dining In or Dining Out. The night begins with informal mingling before the reception line. Following the entrance into the dining room, the cadets and their dates enjoy a meal and finally a keynote speaker, usually a distinguished member of the armed services, makes a speech. The Dining In/Out further indoctrinates the cadets into the social atmosphere of the United States Army.
Commissioning Ceremony
Each spring several cadets are commissioned into the United States Army during ceremonies held on each campus. Families, friends, University Presidents and other distinguished guests take part in the commissioning.
